What is a Siding Square?
By ProMatcher Staff
A square is a common form of measurement in the siding industry. A vinyl siding square is the equivalent of 100 square feet. Siding contractors typically charge for installation “by the square”.
However, one square is not just 100 square feet of siding material. It is actually the amount of siding that is need to cover 100 square feet of your home’s exterior. When vinyl is installed, pieces often overlap each other. There will also be cutouts for windows, doors, and other obstructions.
Getting the correct measurements and ordering the right about product will be critical to the success of your project.
Some examples of square measurements:
• 10’ x 10’ wall = 100 square feet = 1 square
• 20’ x 20’ siding area = 400 square feet = 4 squares
How to Calculate:
Most times, your contractor will take the necessary measurements for you. However, it’s relatively easy to calculate the number of squares needed yourself.
1. Calculate the total square footage of all the exterior walls and gables.
2. Measure every window and door. Calculate the total square footage.
3. Subtract the total square footage of the windows and doors from the total square footage of the home’s exterior.
4. This number represents the total square footage of siding you will need. Now, divide this number by 100 in order to find the number of squares needed.
Note: This number will be an approximation. You will want to order more siding material than this to account for pieces that overlap or potential mistakes. Also, you should add some extra for waste as most pieces will need to be cut to fit properly.
